Research, I presume (or how I survive the summer heat)
Wow, where has time gone? It's been over a month and half since I posted a installment. That big of a gap can only mean one thing: I've been working on my next novels.
Yes, I began my next The Allegheny Chronicles novel....Which turned into two books.....And now quite likely three books. There's a lot that's going into this including research. I write fiction because I make up all of my novels. But there are parts of them that I have to research. These novels are going to be interesting because the story behind Allegheny is going to be explored. The story behind Mason's ancestors is going to be explored. The history behind Veil Falls is going to be explored. And there are going to be 100% fictional legends that I have to weave and create that will rival real life legends.
And in order to know how to weave all that into my coming novels, I've got to know the actual history behind things. Take for instance human history and what is known about migration. Many times we are often thinking that the civilizations of South America are so ancient. But, really, in the grand scheme of things, they really aren't because of migration. You can name off the places of very early human migration as it is taught -- Humans appearing in Africa, spreading north into Europe, the Middle East, Asia, then apparently over an icy land bridge to North America and down into South America. It's just that the civilizations in South America were more advanced in building things that lasted longer than what was done in the North American civilizations. Face it -- Rock lasts longer than mud, dirt, and wood. So, while I have been reading South American Mythology, I then realize I have to really read world mythology. And then I've got to read about the various tribes of Europe. Oh, and can't forget about the First Nations and Indigenous tribes. And then I need to reacquaint myself with the 19th century United States and territories... And then.....
Yeah, I have a lot to do. Of course, while I write and read, in the background of my work, my husband watches history shows like Time Team or survival shows like Alone or even documentary type shows like the Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch, all of which then makes my mind go down more roads with more questions about history and places.
And all the while, I'm writing various chapters which may or may not ever make it into the final copy of the books. But it's all worth in the end.
I've also been loathing the summer heat, in case you've wondered. It's even worse when your home's AC unit goes out on the first hottest day of the year. Annnndd that makes me loathe the heat even more. Quite frankly, If I wanted to have weeks full of triple digit heat, I'd move further south to a desert climate. But I'd never voluntarily live in a desert climate. Because it's hot. I'm not a fan, honestly. I'm good with temperatures that are in the 80s MAX. Not this 114 degree crapola. So, writing and researching is good to do when it's so miserably hot outside and I really don't want to move. I drink my gallon of ice water as my fingers busily type or turn the pages of the stack of books I checked out from the library. It must be interesting being a librarian because you get to see all of the books people are checking out. My list lately has been South American Civilizations and Mythology and history of Native American legends. Oh, and encyclopedias. Yes, I am aware that there is a lot of places online that I can get information as well (Never look at an author's browser history, btw) but I find there's something about a physical book that cannot be duplicated. So, I do check out the various letters of the alphabet for the encyclopedias. (Do you know how much a set of encyclopedias cost? About as much as a new AC Unit for outside.)
So, that's what I've been up to. Be sure to rave to all of your friends about all of the Em Brooks books so we can have our AC unit replaced. (Sooooooo not joking as it's 108 outside right now and almost 90 inside.) And if you've already bought and read all of my books, here's a very gentle reminder to rate and/or review the books on wherever you've bought them. I really appreciate it because your rating COULD inspire other people to buy and read my books, which would be really wonderful of you to help like that.
