Behind the Legend...
Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. Mondays are usually difficult because, let's face it, longer weekends would be awesome.
Today, let's look at book #2 of the Portrait of an Unlikely Affair series. This book differs from book one because in book #1 you are just getting to know who the characters are and what is happening to them. So, yes, in a series, book one is your introduction. And with any luck, you'll be curious enough to go into book #2.
I've discussed Portrait of an Unlikely Affair in several earlier posts, including origins and how I came up with the idea for the series, and how I didn't expect it to be a series. (Check those out theauthorembrooks.blogspot.com) Now, if you haven't read Portrait of an Unlikely Affair, be forewarned that this post MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.
The Legend of CuSithGrim (my brain pronounces it at COO-Sith-Grim. The AI narrator calls it Q-Sith-Grim. I prefer my brain's pronunciation, but my brain is known to slaughter words, especially French words.) covers not only the "present" of the book (1996) but also Brian Ridley's past. It jumps back and forth so you get to know everything the mysterious Brian has been through to bring him to who he is "today." Let me just state the obvious and say there is no real legend, just as there is no real Sovereign Nation of Gurmcheckistan. I made it up. That's why I like to write fiction. I can just make things up and create whatever I want to fit whatever space I need. Sometimes it goes how I want it to, sometimes my characters hate me and refuse to talk to me for days (AKA Writer's Block.) In the end, the story goes how it is supposed to go and I'm often surprised. Before I go off on too many tangents, I also created the word CuSithGrim. Cù-sìth(e) is a harbinger of death in Scottish/Celtic Mythology while Grim is known to us from the Grim Reaper. If you look at the different mythology in various cultures, you will see a common theme, same or similar mythology with different names, all doing the same things. How this became world wide in ancient times where there was no internet, telephones, or mass travel for sight-seeing and vacations, is quite intriguing. Anyway I made up the legend up before I even came up with the name. For a while, I ran with name "Kuligrath" but it felt wrong. When I happened to look down at my notes and saw random words running together, I realized I had my name. Of course, now that I write this, I realize the irony in all of Brian's names. That was not something I planned at all.
In this particular book, it takes your further into the story, introduces you to new characters, and you get to know other characters better. Like Tom, Brian's father.
You also get to meet, and know, his family beyond his stepmother and his stepbrother. Of course, in this is also the developing of Avonlea and their relationship and just how unlikely it really is.
I had more I was going to write, but it is obvious that I am needed elsewhere by my children, (quite frankly I forgot all of my writing points with constant interruptions this morning.) I am an author, but first and foremost, I am a mom so I've got to switch hats and go be mom. We will continue this post once I recall what it is I was going to write. But I really wanted to get something out and I hope this post does further stimulate your curiosity about book two.
Remember, if you have any questions or comments, all you have to do is ask!!
