Your Friday Tidbit -- Procrastination
I wasn't actually procrastinating. I got lost in other chores and tasks that need done that I didn't get a chance to sit down at my desk this morning. It happens. But those other chores are finished so now I can actually get to work. Writing never seems like work though -- it's a reward for accomplishing all of these other things. One thing I don't understand, now that I have Facebook again, is all the 'how to stop procrastinating' articles they have geared toward writers, and all of the memes about how writers procrastinate. I don't get it. I use writing and reading to procrastinate on doing other things (getting out of bed, washing dishes, doing laundry....) but I never procrastinate about writing. I love writing. I love reading. I'd rather do that than whatever procrastination strategies those memes and articles are talking about doing. When I write, I write. When I don't, I do other things. There is no "oh no, I have to write words today." In fact, when I write, it's like time traveling. Hours pass by in an instant. I just don't get it. Writing is pure joy.
So, Happy Friday! Hope your week went well. I guess the groundhog did something this week that means there is six more weeks of winter and people aren't too happy about that. Eh. I'm just hoping that we don't have a false spring that sends the fruit trees into bloom and then have a heavy freeze that follows it. That's no good. We missed out on all of our fruit trees last year because it did just that and it was a total bummer. Anyhow, today is our Friday Tidbit and as I've mentioned earlier in the week, I've been rereading my books as a reader this time. I'm convinced that there is a publishing gremlin that goes in and makes mistakes in your writing at the moment the book publishes. And don't even get me started on auto correct that is now on EVERYTHING and only seems to want to auto-correct you with the wrong words and the wrong spelling. For example, I notice I write 'for' and have it in a correct usage and auto correct changes it to 'foe.' If I don't go back and reread my text or post before I post it my sentence says, "Foe example, the correct usage foe the rolling pin is...." and you get the point. UGH. Technology. And then you know that everyone who loves proper grammar and word usage is then thinking "this person can't even spell. Why did they want to become a writer?"
But I've been enjoying reading my books and seeing how the characters develop. I am now about 100 pages into book 5 off my Portrait series, Project Broken Glass. It amazes me simply because I had zero idea where the story was going and zero idea as how 'major' of a character some of these people would be. A few weeks ago, I started looking at my characters to see if they'd be believable as real people. We took a closer look at Tom Ridley, which you can find by clicking on his name as I have linked it back to that article. As I have begun with the supporting characters in Portrait of an Unlikely Affair, let's continue.
Today I am looking at Seth Jacobson.
Interestingly enough, Seth Jacobson is the first person you meet in the book. He is a photo journalist. Apparently he is a very good one that was chosen be in the position he is in. He seems to be very happy in that position too. When Avonlea Stone meets Seth, it is her second evening in Cable Glen and he shows up at Luciano's with Maggie Hudson at Tom's request. He remains in the background until the end of the book when the story comes full circle. It isn't until book 2. The Legend of CùSithGrim, that we find out more about Seth and how he got to be where he is. We also learn about the irony behind Seth and Maggie's 'dinner date' at Luciano's the night Avonlea meets him. After that point, he establishes himself as a secondary character and is instrumental in several aspects of Brian and Avonlea's story from there, even becoming one of Brian's 'closest friends,' if you can imagine Brian having close friends. His relationship with Gentry Adams, who is Avonlea's right hand, essentially seals his place in the 'inner circle' and Seth actually becomes a 'big deal' on his own, taking his work documenting Oscar Company and turning it into something no one would expect it to become. But you'll have to find all that out on your own. I don't want to give too much away.
So, for those of you who have read at least one or two books in the Portrait series, what do you think of Seth Jacobson? Do you think a man of his skills should have given up his career for the assignment he did? What is your take on him? And who, so far, is your favorite character? Why?
By the time we chat next, I'm sure I'll be reading book six, The Disruption of Forever....The series finale. I'm excited about reaching that book, yet part of me is sad that the series is almost to an end. Guess I'll just have to write another book about something else. I do have some characters who have been patiently waiting for me to get to them and I can't wait for you to meet them.
On that note, I'll let you get about your day. Thank you for hanging out with me today, I appreciate it! As always, there are tons of books out there for you to read and I am honored that you take the time to read mine. They grow on you. Trust me. I know some people are what are self-labeled 'slow readers' and are taking their time reading through them. I also know I have the fast readers who get caught up and just fly through them. It doesn't matter what kind of reader you are, I am glad to have you here. To me, you're all wonderful just the way you are.
Until next time, enjoy! It's perfectly OK to do nothing all weekend and get in some self-care. In fact, doing nothing is amazingly relaxing. Have a great weekend!
Start the journey of a lifetime with book 1, Portrait of an Unlikely Affair today!
