Beyond the Sample -- Teaser Tuesday for the Allegheny Chronicles - Eden and the Alchemist
“Why would Edi buy a ranch? Nah. I reckon she’d get a place where she could have her greenhouse and do her research. I would love it if she’d open up her own restaurant. Perhaps that’s what she’s fixin’ to do. Come, be close to family, and live a simple life,” Jed perked up. “She’d bring some good cooking back to the county.”
Maureen didn’t say anything. Like Jed, she was curious as to why Eden was asking them to come to the address she had given them, inviting them over for dinner. Two weeks ago, after Eden had returned from teaching in France, Eden announced to them that she was selling her house in Maryland and would be beginning new research for a new book. Maureen had been surprised, supportive, and concerned. Eden just told Maureen that everything would turn out to be fine, that she didn’t have to worry. Yet Maureen still worried.
Jed gave Maureen a look. “Yup. The Old Potter Ranch. That’s where we’re going.” He slowed down and turned into the driveway, immediately seeing the ranch was now known as the H-Bar-Anchor Ranch, and saw the name “Halifax” by the address sign. Jed let out a deep sigh. His fears were coming true. She was letting Barrett go. “It says Halifax. She’s going back to her maiden name. Do you think that’s what she’s going to tell us?”
Maureen sighed sadly. “It’s hard to be a Magnuss without the man who made you one.”
“I don’t expect her to stay single for the rest of her life,” Jed frowned. “It’s just the timing…”
“He’s not coming back, Jed. As much as we’d love him to, we’re going to have to accept it.”
“I’ll be nice if she’s got her beau here,” Jed muttered, pushing aside his emotions...
