Beyond the Sample: Teaser Tuesday for Em's Debut Novel, Along the Way -- available now on Amazon!

It was the most complicated thing that Ryan felt he would ever learn, as he had retained nothing but the memory of Angelina from his lesson years ago. Angelina promised that dancing was “just as easy as walking” but Ryan couldn’t see how, after all, she was directly in front of him and he was trying so hard not to step on her feet.

“Don’t worry about my feet,” she’d tell him. “I’ll make sure I move them.”

But he could see the French manicure on her delicate looking toes and just knew he was going to step on them. Hurting her physically by smashing her toes wasn’t something he wanted to do, especially since he could remember the bruise on her foot from earlier in the week from Chris, who supposedly already knew what he was doing.

“Don’t watch your feet,” Angelina gently instructed. “Watch where you’re going.”

His eyes snapped up from the floor to look at her. “Yeah, right. ‘Just as easy as walking.’ You’ve got to be nuts. Next you’ll expect me to do all this in time with music.”

She laughed, “Oh, we’ll work up to that.”

Ryan’s other hurdle to cross was just being in close proximity to her. It made him even more flustered trying to not to show that he liked having her hand in his, his arm around her. He was feeling butterflies, he was feeling his heart pound, and he was trying so hard to follow her instructions to not worry about stepping on her. She began talking about the history of the dance they were doing, the foxtrot, and about the man who was attributed to creating the dance, Harry Fox. “He was a Vaudeville actor who reportedly also played baseball, and was part of the circus at one point.”

“Oh, great,” he grinned. “I should have known that a clown came up with this.”

“I don’t think he was an actual clown,” she grinned back. As she talked and he made comments or asked questions, he soon forgot all about what his feet was doing and they had made a couple laps around the dance floor. It seemed only she was aware of that because she stopped him by the music booth and said, “I think you’re ready to try this to some Dean Martin.”
